The
food and beverage industry is essential to any nation in the world. It refers
to restaurants, cafeterias, cafes, fast food chains, pubs, delicatessens, food
manufacturing operations, catering business, food transportation services, hotel
and more. This is one of the most important of all the industries of the world,
as food is universal to human life and health, hence, imperative for this
industry to observe and practice local and international standards of food
safety and business operations.
The country’s food and beverage is a multi-billion industry. In 2020, the market revenue of the industry is $100 billion and is expected to grow further in the following years. The leading company in the industry is San Miguel Corporation. The food and beverage giant made around $21 billion annual revenue in an August 2021 government data, followed by Top Frontier Holdings and Alliance Global with $19 billion and $9B dollars respectively.
Numerous domestic rules and regulations are imposed to ensure food safety and hygiene for consumer welfare. The Food Safety Act of 2013 is the existing law that governs the imposition of said rules and regulations. The said legislation provides a definite framework of farm to fork safety regulatory systems that guarantees high level of food safety, promotes fair trade and advances global competitiveness of Filipino food and food products. Agencies attached to the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) are the regulatory bodies.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has the same objectives set both for local and global market. It provides an international market-relevant guidelines which give framework for companies to introduce businesses and products and implement necessary changes of policies for improvement of workforce, organizational structures and other processes within the food and beverage industry. The ISO 22000 is the particular certification for food safety management standards set for primary producers such as farms and fisheries, processors and manufacturers of packaged or canned foods, restaurants, hotels, caterers and other businesses in which food is prepared.
